YIN YOGA
What is Yin Yoga?
Yin yoga is a gentle yet profound practice that focuses on stretching and releasing the deeper connective tissues of the body.
Unlike more dynamic styles of yoga, yin yoga poses are held for an extended period of time, typically ranging from 3 to 7 minutes or even longer. This extended duration allows for a deep opening of the body and a profound sense of relaxation and surrender.
YIN & YANG
Influenced by Taoist philosophy and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Yin yoga is deeply rooted in the concept of yin and yang, as symbolised by the Taijitu, or yin-yang symbol.
Yin and yang are opposing forces that are interconnected and interdependent, representing the dualistic nature of existence. Yin is associated with qualities such as stillness, darkness, and receptivity, while yang is associated with movement, light, and activity.
The Taijitu symbolises the dynamic interplay and harmony between yin and yang, illustrating how each contains the seed of the other within it. Similarly, in Yin Yoga, poses are often paired with their yang counterparts to create a balanced practice that addresses both the passive and active aspects of the body.
The Complementary Nature of the Yin of Yoga and the Yang of Strength Training
These two modalities complement each other beautifully, each enhancing the benefits of the other.
While strength training emphasises yang qualities, characterised by high activity and energy, yin yoga provides a serene counterbalance, inviting practitioners to slow down, turn inward, and foster mindfulness.
